Sociology of
Gender
The sociology that deals with the issue of gender examines the ways in
which differences between men and women down by
culture and social structures. These differences are culturally and
socially prepared in such a way as to give women special "feminine"
qualities and a specific gender identity established through
socialization.
The concept of gender is used to mark all the things a person says or
does to indicate it is a boy or girl, man or woman. It includes
sexuality but not limited to this. Other characteristics that gender is
the dress, the way of speech, body movement, occupation, and other
factors not limited by the biological sex., The "sex" refers to the
biological distinction between male and female, and " gender "in
parallel and socially unequal separation into male and female. So the
focus on gender dimensions of socially constructed differences between
men and women.
In addition, however, the term "gender" has subsequently broadened: not
just about individual identity and personality of an individual but
refers to a symbolic level, the cultural ideals and stereotypes of
masculinity and femininity, and a structural level, gender
discrimination at work in the context of social institutions and
organizations. In 1970, the sociological and psychological studies have
focused on the scientific definition of gender. This means that sought
to demonstrate the differences and distinctions between men and women
should not be interpreted based on biological difference and that the
culturally dominant ideas about masculinity and femininity are
stereotypes that only superficially correspond to reality. This proved
that there are large cross-cultural differences in ideas related to
gender and social roles of men and women, particularly in the areas of
family, education and work.
